APICS/CPIM Review Courses

The American Production and Inventory Society (APICS) require that an individual successfully complete five tests based on the content of the five certification review course listed below. Joliet Junior College allows supply chain management personnel the opportunity to complete all five of the certification review courses in less than one year. APICS suggests that you take the Basics class first, then take the middle three classes in any order, and then take the Strategic Management of Resources as your last class.

The tests are administered by ASI Testing in Westmont (800)-274-8399. The classes are nine to ten weeks long. They meet on weekday evenings from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The instructors are assigned by the local APICS chapter. The class fee is $495 for each unit.

Basics of Supply Chain Management (APIC 473)
This introductory course for production and inventory management personnel and CPIM candidates provides basic definitions and concepts for planning and controlling the flow of materials into, through, and out of an organization. It explains fundamental relationships among the activities that occur in the supply chain from supplies to customers. Participants will review manufacturing systems, forecasting, master planning, materials requirements planning, capacity management, production activity control, purchasing, inventory management, distribution, quality management, and Just-in-Time manufacturing. This class is usually offered in September and January.

Execution and Control of Operations (APIC 482)
This course focuses on three main areas: prioritizing and sequencing work: executing work plans, implementing controls, and reporting activity results; and evaluating and providing feedback on performance. The course explains techniques for scheduling and controlling production and process operations, and the execution of quality initiatives, as well as controlling and handling inventories. Finally, the course presents techniques for evaluating performance and collecting data for effective feedback. This class is usually offered in October.

Detailed Scheduling and Planning (APIC 481)
This course focuses on the material and capacity scheduling and planning. It includes a detailed explanation of material requirements planning (MRP), a technique suitable for use in job shops. The course also introduces another material planning technique, material-dominated scheduling, which is applicable to process industries and other mature production environments. The course explains capacity requirements planning in detail and introduces other capacity-planning techniques, including processor-dominated scheduling. This class is usually offered in January.

Master Planning of Resources (APIC 480)
In this course, participants explore processes used to develop sales and operations plans, identify and assess internal and external demand and forecasting requirements and formulate an achievable master schedule consistent with business policies, objectives, and resource constraints. The course focuses on developing and validating a plan of supply, relating management of demand to environment, and developing and validating the master schedule

Strategic Management of Resources (APIC 483)
Determine the relationship of existing and emerging processes and technologies to manufacturing strategy and supply chain related functions. Address three main topics: aligning resources with the strategic plan, configuring and integrating operating processes to support the strategic plan, and implementing change. This class is usually offered in May.

Front Line Supervision

The Frontline Supervision Certificate Program is designed to help the front line supervisor develop the skills, understanding and insights required to excel as a manager of people, production, and quality. The program is orientated towards specific skill development versus theoretical approaches to management.

The components of this course are Frontline Supervision, Effective Employee Communication, Building Your Team and Managing Individuals, Total Quality Management and Productivity, Employment Law, Safety, and Labor Relations. This course is offered over 28 weeks. The cost for the entire program is $1400. It can be started at any time during the program each unit can also be taken as an independent class.

Unit 1: First Line Supervision (MGT 7810)
This seven-week unit covers topics such as the supervisor's role in management, the environment of the supervisor, planning and goal setting, organizing, delegating and motivating the work force, human behavior, and leadership skills. This class is usually offered in September.

Unit 2: Effective Employee Communications (MGT 7820)
This seven week unit addresses the techniques, strategies, and legal aspects that should be considered when communicating with employees. Topics include interviewing, conducting performance reviews, training, administering discipline, and employee counseling. This class is usually offered in October.

Unit 3: Building Your Team and Managing Individuals (MGT 7830)
This six week course discusses team concepts, various stages of team development and team member roles. Learn to encourage group participation and self management from the team. Identify sources of conflict within the team and how to restore cooperation. This class is usually offered in January.

Unit 4: Total Quality Management and Productivity (MGT 7840)
This four week unit covers such topics as zero defects programs, total quality management, measuring productivity by work sampling, cost control, and improving productivity. This class is usually offered in March.

Unit 5: Employment Law, Safety and Labor Relations (MGT 7850)
This final, four-week unit includes issues such as workforce diversity, equal employment opportunity laws, disability acts, employee privacy rights, OSHA safety regulations, safety committees, and labor relations. This class is usually offered in April.

Basic Sales Skills (MGT 7021)
Successful salespeople understand key selling principles and know how to apply them. Learn the six steps of the sales process as well as strategies that will help you understand your customers' decision making practices and collaborate with them to fulfill their needs. Other topics include prospecting, making sales calls, handling objections and creating sales presentations.

Advanced Sales Skills (MGT 7022)
Learn how to build relationships with clients, use sales strategies to identify those most likely to need your products or services, help clients find solutions that satisfy their needs, and effectively close sales.

Customer Service Excellence: Skills for Success (CUST 578)
Meeting and exceeding customer expectations is a key to success in businesses and organizations of all types and sizes. In this daylong program, you'll focus on the fundamentals and key skills required to provide excellent service to your customers and help you reduce job stress. Whether you're a customer service representative, manager or team leader, you'll benefit from this program's focus on basic service skills, strategies for managing dissatisfied customers and techniques for communicating effectively with customers.

Creating Successful Sales Presentations (MGT 7039)
Targeted for the sales professionals, support teams or small companies, learn how to create powerful presentations, proposals and quotes that will get you the sale! This seminar focuses on tips for utilizing PowerPoint, Word and computer graphics that will make your communications stand out from others. The use of images, charts and graphs will be discussed. Learn how to convey the right message through your correspondence.

Promote Yourself (MGT 7040)
Targeted for businesses on a budget, we will give you the tools to promote yourself without breaking the bank. Whether you are in the process of starting your own business or looking to create more effective marketing materials, this seminar has it all. Join us as we go through logo design, advertisements, newspaper inserts, postcards, referrals, in-store promotions, postcards, press releases, brochures/flyers, newsletters, promotional specialties/incentives, creating letterhead/envelope/label designs and other template documents.

Sales Event Planning (MGT 7041)
Learn to plan company events and conferences that will leave an impression. Through checklists and in-class exercises, you will learn to hone your creative side. Meeting materials, promotional specialties and more will be discussed.

Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.)

The Certified Purchasing Manager program was originated by NAPM in 1974, and is the first nationally accepted standard of competence and knowledge for the purchasing/materials management field. Those who earn the title of C.P.M. join a select but fast growing professional group, widely recognized by management and colleagues to be among the most knowledgeable in today's competitive world of purchasing and materials management.

The Certified Purchasing Manager is focused on the managerial, administrative, and strategic, as well as tactical aspects of the purchasing function. It is designed for those individuals working in any of the major private, public or non-profit work sectors.

Joliet Junior College's C.P.M. review courses were developed to assist individuals in the purchasing and materials field in reviewing materials necessary to complete the certification process in a standardized, easy-to-follow format. Courses are offered in a modular format so that participants can complete examinations immediately following review of each topic area. Modules are offered in a six-week, one night a week for three hours style to fit in with busy work schedules. All materials are included in the cost of the modules. Books supplied are the "official" ISM study materials. However, the C.P.M. instructor, William Steinke, CFPIM, CIRM, QI, C.P.M., A.P.P., CAMH, CABM, has developed a comprehensive guide that is not available anywhere else. This guide is worth the cost of the class for reference purposes!
