Description

The workshop provides an understanding of electricity focused on increased awareness and prevention of industrial and home accidents.

You will learn

  1. How voltage, current, and resistance are related, and the effects various amounts of current have on the human body.
  2. How to identify the factors that influence body resistance to electric shock.
  3. How the amount of time spent in contact with an electrical circuit will affect the severity of shock.
  4. The basic safety rules when working around electricity, and the safe loading of circuits.
  5. How to identify safety considerations when using an extension cord and the proper procedure for inspecting portable electric hand tools.
  6. To define the purpose of a ground fault interrupter (GFI).
  7. To identify the correct type of fire extinguisher to use on an electrical fire.
  8. To identify the need to lock and tag a de-energized circuit before working on the circuit.
  9. To describe the dangers of static electricity.

Your instructor

Jerry Raino is a member of the technical department at Joliet Junior College. He has been an instructor in the Electrical/Electronic Automated Systems program since 1984. He is also an journeyman electrician. Jerry has a B.S. in Vocational Education from Southern Illinois University and a M.S. in Instructional Technology from Northern Illinois University. He is also the co-author of a training manual, Industrial Motors, published by Energy Concepts (1991).
