Minnesota Takes the Lead on E-Verify
Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty (R) issued an executive order on January 28, 2008 requiring
businesses to comply with E-verify. Participation in E-Verify is currently voluntary, however,
Minnesota is among a growing number of states considering mandating compliance.
Essentially, Pawlenty's executive order establishes procedures for recipients of business subsidies
from the state to certify their compliance with the requirement of current U.S. immigration law.
Based on the governor's timeframe, the order will take effect in early February.
