Expect More State Legislation on HR Issues

According to the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), 2008 will be a busy year in state legislatures across the country. Human resource issues will be the focus of much of the new laws. SHRM anticipates new laws in three critical areas:

  1. Immigration Reform
    • A growing number of states are considering mandating E-Verify for employers.
  2. Family Leave
    • Employers may be faced with extending their policies on paid leave and short-term disability.
  3. Weapons in the Workplace
    • Many states are considering legislation that would prohibit companies from enforcing policies that ban weapons from the workplace.
