U.S. Department of Labor Submits New Budget
The U.S. Department of Labor affects all businesses in some way. For that reason, we are providing a
link to their FY 2009 budget submission.
The submitted budget reflects the following priorities:
- Worker safety
- Worker pay, benefits, pensions, and union member rights
- Serving veterans and their transition to civilian life
- Modernizing temporary foreign labor certification programs
- Encouraging growth policies that create jobs
The DOL is requesting $10.5 billion in discretionary budget authority and 16,848 full-time equivalent
employees. This budget builds upon the FY 2006 - FY2011 Strategic Plan goals as outlined in
A Prepared Workforce,
A Competitive Workforce, Safe and Secure Workplaces, and Strengthened Economic Protection.
The Department will measure its accomplishments in FY 2009 against the following strategic goals:
- Goal 1 — A Prepared Workforce: Develop a prepared workforce by
providing effective training and support services to new and incumbent workers and supplying high
quality information on the economy and labor market.
- Goal 2 — A Competitive Workforce: Meet the competitive labor demands
of the worldwide economy by enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of the workforce development
and regulatory systems that assist workers and employers in meeting the challenges of global
competition.
- Goal 3 — Safe and Secure Workplaces: Promote workplaces that are
safe, healthful and fair; guarantee workers receive the wages due them; foster equal opportunity in
employment; and protect veterans' employment and re-employment rights.
- Goal 4 — Strengthened Economic Protections: Protect and strengthen
worker economic security through effective and efficient provision of unemployment insurance and
workers' compensation; ensuring union transparency; and securing pension and health benefits.
