Argonne Labs Helps Build New Supercomputer
The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded $25 million for the construction of a
50 teraflop (50 trillion calculations per second) supercomputer. Argonne National
Laboratory will be working with the Cray Corporation, IBM, and Silicon Graphics,
Inc. to develop a supercomputer that will be open to the scientific community for
research.
"I want to congratulate Dr. Hermann Grunder, director of Argonne National Laboratory,
and all of the hardworking, dedicated scientists, engineers, and researchers at
the laboratory, for their role in this critical project," said Illinois Governor
Blagojevich. "Illinois has a long history of innovation, and this is just one more
example of the talent that makes this innovation possible."
The supercomputer will be located at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge
Tennessee where Argonne plans to install a 5-teraflop IBM BlueGene computer. The
BlueGene architecture is designed to engage the widest possible range of applications
and will be used to explore many promising technologies.
Charted in 1946, Argonne is the nation's first national laboratory. Its continued
growth has generated jobs for more than 4,000 employees with an annual budget of
nearly a half billion dollars. Argonne's research falls into four categories including
basic science, scientific facilities, energy resources, and environmental management.
