Be Prepared for Telecommuting
Telecommuting is not for every job, employee, or business. If you are considering
it, here are some ideas to ponder:
Does the job lend itself to telecommuting
Many jobs are perfect for telecommuting. Selling, for example, can easily be done
from home. Other jobs may not be as accommodating. Analyze how often the employee
needs the resources of the office to accomplish their job. If they can do it offsite,
chances are they can telecommute.
Does your business lend itself to telecommuting
Some businesses are not suited to workers being offsite. Auto service and retail
stores are obvious examples. If most of your business is done on the phone or over
the Internet, your people may be good candidates for telecommuting.
What is the attitude of your workforce
Are your workers self-motivated? Can they work with a minimum of supervision? Are
they disciplined enough to stay with a problem without the boss watching them? If
the answer is affirmative to all these questions, chances are good that your people
are ready to telecommute. If not, they may need some training.
Can you easily obtain the technology necessary to implement telecommuting
This may only require a computer and a phone, but in some cases you may need special
software and hardware.
