Technology Workers Want More Control

According to a new report from Deloitte, a professional consulting firm, technology companies use outdated tactics to recruit and retain talent.

More than 150 technology and telecommunications companies participated in this study. Seventy-one percent use financial incentives to attract and retain talent. In stark contrast, only 48 percent use training and development programs.

According to Deloitte, today's technology workers are more interested in controlling their work schedules than money.

"Workers today aren't as interested as they used to be in hefty compensation packages and fancy retirement plans," Deloitte said. "What they really want—more than anything else—is direct and personal control over when, where and how they work."

Deloitte also says retirees re-entering the workforce want the same flexibility as their younger "Millennial" co-workers. "So do 'Gen-Xers' although they are probably too afraid to ask," said Deloitte.

Deloitte recommends that companies develop programs in career customization that would allow workers to personalize career development.
